An Abs-olutely Essential Part of Strength Training
By Jennifer Gruenemay, ACE-Certified, LifeScript
Staff Writer
Exercising for an hour is grueling enough, but to end that hour by
suffering through set upon set of abdominal exercises is just plain
cruel. Unfortunately, working out your tummy is an essential part of a
balanced fitness program, and it’s something that you just
shouldn’t skip – no matter how much you hate to do it. In fact,
not only can strengthening your abdominal muscles make you look
thinner (because of better posture), but it’s also essential for
protecting against lower back pain. A strong core supports your whole
trunk, and can reduce low-back pain, which just so happens to be one
of the top complaints among aging adults. If you struggle with your
abdominal workout at the end of your exercise session, try
incorporating it into your strength workout. Between exercise sets,
choose one or two abdominal exercises to do and perform 10-15
repetitions of each and then move on to your next weight machine.
It’s sort of like a super circuit (where cardio activities, like
jump roping or jogging, are performed after each strength set), but
with abdominal exercises performed in between sets instead of
aerobics. By the time you’re finished with your hour of strength
training you will actually end up doing more crunches, sit-ups and
oblique crossovers than if you had left it all until the end of the
workout.
